The regulatory framework governing hemp-derived products in the European Union (EU) is characterised by a functional differentiation between food and feed law, combined with substance-specific authorisation requirements. While certain parts of the hemp plant have a recognised history of safe use and are integrated into existing regulatory schemes, isolated phytocannabinoids are subject to a markedly stricter pre-market authorisation regime. The legal assessment therefore depends not only on the botanical origin of the material, but primarily on its composition, intended use and regulatory classification.
