Antibiotics were the one of the revolutionary discoveries of the 20th century, while their resistance has turned out to be one of the grievous challenges of the 21st century. Dr Pankaj Dhaka of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Dr Deepthi Vijay of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Kerala and Dr Jay Prakash Yadav of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, explain that, like many emerging public health problems, the problem of antibiotic resistance reminds us of the complete interconnectedness of the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. To better understand and respond rapidly to this public health emergency at the human–animal–environment interface requires coordinated, collaborative, multidisciplinary, and cross-sectoral approaches.
